It was started by Google and as of now all the major search engines have adopted link popularity in their algorithms. You might know that link popularity of a site depends on the number of sites linked to its pages. Link popularity depends on a number of factors including the quality of sites with which you are linked, how much relevant the linked sites are to your site, the content quality of the links and there are times when the number of links is also taken into consideration. But most often than not, it is quality that determine popularity and not quantity.
Once you are done with links, you can make use of Google Toolbar to check out the rankings of your competitors. And if they are above you, you need to get more quality links. So, how to go about it? Well, first of all, if you sell suppose ebooks on dog training, you need to type in the best keyword phrases in a search engine like Google. You might find the site of your competitor getting better ranking than you. Click on that link and on the Google Toolbar you would find page rank between one and ten. Now, check the backward links and you would find out the number of sites that are linked to that site. You now need to get more links than that to get better page rankings.
